Grove City council discusses legality of electric scooters

Dec 12, 2023

GROVE CITY – One of the hottest new crazes for kids is the electric scooter. A fast and easy to operate scooter that kids can use to get to their friends house.

These scooters are technically against the law on public property.

According to Grove City police Chief Mike Allias, legislation on these scooters is behind. They need to operate under what the laws say. These scooters are technically illegal on roads and public sidewalks under current law.

At Tuesday’s meeting, a council member reported having multiple complaints about kids riding these in the roads. Due to these complaints, the borough will be treating these scooters more seriously.

Alias has said they will not start citing kids for riding these, but they will begin educating kids on them. If the police force sees a kid riding on them, they may talk to the kid and may even speak to the parents.

“We don’t want to be the fun police, we don’t want to start citing kids or anything like that,” Alias said. “These scooters are technically only allowed on private property though, so we will try to educate kids on this.”

A solution mentioned by the council for kids wanting to ride is that the bike trail in the park may be the best place for them.

Council also:

• Tabled a vote on amending the ordinance on open containers and the prohibition of alcohol in Grove City Memorial Park. The vote was tabled to discuss at a later meeting after Nancy Wagner, a Grove City resident, expressed concern over the issue.

• Granted approval for Montgomery Truss and Panel Inc. to use 915 W Main St. as a manufacturing site. The approval came with conditions that the company would remove the existing sign pole from the property, all manufacturing work would be held indoors and no excess of noise or pollution would come from the plant.

• Swore in a new junior councilperson, Ellie Myford. Ellie is a high school senior and a member of the golf team. The position allows Ellie to sit in at meetings, though she will not be able to vote.

• Heard from Paul McNulty, the president of Grove City College, who announced that the long-awaited Chick-fil-A restaurant on campus is expected to be opened Sept. 11. He said it will have parking spaces for non-college students.

• Approved the sewer lateral inspection program. This will force real estate agents to have videos taken of the sewer system of a home to prove there is no damage before selling.

The rule will take effect Jan. 1 to give sellers and plumbers time to prepare.
